Interview with musician David Mooney. Animator Philip Martin. director Christine Veras.

Get to know filmmaker Christine Veras

I run an experimental animation lab at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). At an event, I connected with the jazz musician and professor at University of North Texas (UNT) Davy Mooney, and playfully suggested that we should collaborate on an animated piece one day. To my surprise, a few months later (December 2022), he contacted me and said that he would like my lab to animate one of the tracks of his new album. I said yes, and we had around four months to create the animation before the album’s release in early June 2023.

Get to know the filmmaker:
I wanted to make something in Maine near the family house that I’ve been going up to every summer my whole life, and I wanted it to be something that could help me get work in nature/travel TV (like National Geographic). After thinking a while about it, I decided a documentary about lobstering was the best opportunity.

December 1, 2022 - Filmmaker Clay Antonatos (AN ELIXIR FOR THE EXTINCTION OF EXPERIENCE)

AN ELIXIR FOR THE EXTINCTION OF EXPERIENCE, 11min., USA, Documentary
Directed by Clay Antonatos
The threats of the climate crisis are more and more becoming a reality, posing immense challenges to human and ecosystem health, yet it continuously proves difficult to make any meaningful change. We can’t see meaningfully due to a result of our collective “extinction of experience” with nature driven by urbanization, industrialization, and digitization of our worlds.

From Clay Antonatos :

On a very superficial level, I made elixir to fulfill the thesis requirement for my undergraduate Environmental Studies degree without having to write 75+ pages… making a film sounded much better to me than having to spend the year sitting inside and writing! On a deeper level, though, I made elixir as a way to make myself and my audience more attuned to the natural world that surrounds us. I am a firm believer that a lot of our climate and ecological crises can be attributed to a lack of attention to, care for, and knowledge of the natural world. elixir was a way for me to begin to chip away at the artificial disconnect between humans and nature through an approachable medium (video) in a manner that emphasized personal outdoor experience over the often exclusionary realms of academia and scientific study.

August 2, 2022 - Filmmaker Christian Jacob Eisenbarth (LAST DAY ON EARTH)

LAST DAY ON EARTH was the winner of BEST DRAMA FILM at the July 2022 ENVIRONMENTAL Film Festival.

https://instagram.com/lastdayonearthfilm

Director Biography - Christian Jacob Eisenbarth

Christian is from a small town in in rural Wyoming. Majoring in Audio Engineering and Music Technology, it gave him the opportunity to work for some of the biggest recording studios in the world in Los Angeles. Having a background in music, sound design, and photography, gave him a unique story telling perspective. He has always had a passion for nature and protecting the environment.

Director Statement

My name is Christian, this film was inspired by a 2 day solo trip I took to Washington to visit the Olympic Peninsula to go to a rain forest for the first time. I had never seen a place more beautiful in my life; to my dismay, I discovered that most of Washington is victim to commerical logging, completely destroying the natural habitat.  The stark contrast between life and death deeply inspired me that I needed to do something to stop this.  While in the forest, I had a vision of an old man experiencing his last day on earth, an idea I felt could help rebuild this devastated ecosytem and touch the heart of millions. I felt chosen by nature to be the vessel in which this story is brought to life.
