EP. 1077 - Screenwriter Janna Jones (POSTAGE DUE & CHEAP, SEXY & SHOCKING)

Watch Best Scene reading from Janna Jones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5Xwc4PwwaA

Cheap, Sexy, and Shocking! is loosely based on the career of Louise Downe who played a significant role in the exploitation cinema movement in the 1960s and early 1970s. Her contributions as an actor, screenwriter, assistant director, and designer are a noteworthy chapter in twentieth century cinema history, but her efforts have been routinely overlooked, as she has been overshadowed by her moviemaking partner, the king of gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis.

EP. 1051 - Screenwriter André Meira (A Dangerous Gamble)

Watch the Screenplay Reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL_415N30eg

A woman with mental health issues, pressured by the insults of her own mother, attempts to stage the kidnapping of her daughter to prove she can make money… but the stunt goes wrong.

Get to know the writer:

– “A Dangerous Gamble” is the story of a woman who tries to circumvent her sensitive monetary situation and family peer pressure in risky or illegal ways, and it all goes drastically wrong. It is, ultimately, a reflection of the sinister influence of capitalism in mental health. The concept had been gestating on me for a long time, and it morphed into what it is today as I started becoming more politically aware. Often I would think to myself about people who may not have a choice other than try to survive and yet, their own attempts for survival represent the further deterioration of their health, but they can’t do anything about it because, well, you’re just expected to eat it up and move on. I kept going back to this old “conspiracy theory” elevator pitch of sorts that I came up with as a child, of a mother who faked her child’s kidnapping to earn money from donations. Think I came up with that during the early years of the Madeleine McCann disappearance case (I am Portuguese haha).

BEYOND THE DOOR, 12min., USA
Directed by Gregory Klino, MJ Palo
When a man buys a cuckoo clock for his wife, he discovers that there is more behind the cuckoo’s door than just the cuckoo.

Get to know writer P. James Norris:

I took Aaron Sorkin’s Masterclass on screenwriting in 2018 and our first assignment was to adapt a short story as a no more than 10 page screenplay. I don’t remember remember how I stumbled across Philip K. Dick’s 1954 short story, “Beyond the Door”—I know I was searching for stories in the public domain, and I think I was searching for Philip K. Dick stories in particular as he has got to be the most adapted American writer, period.

An aspiring screenwriter who struggles to support his family becomes successful after he uses a mysterious writing software that alters reality. But, with that comes a price that he never imagined he’d have to pay.

Get to know the screenwriter:

Every one can identify with the struggle of finding your calling and living it out. This story shows what happens when we decide to do things based on our own wisdom (which can be flawed) and not relying on God’s wisdom. It asks that question, “If you had the power to do what you wanted, how would you wield that power and at what cost?” It shows what the love of a family can do to heal the wrongs of one’s actions. What is more important, family or career? Can it be both or do we tend to put one over the other for the wrong reasons.

A Korean-born, American-raised K-pop idol working on the release of her solo debut track in Seoul, struggles with the language and cultural differences while dealing with a crazed stalker who’s dangerously obsessed with her.

http://www.adamjayung.com/

Get to know the writer:

On the surface, the screenplay is about a young K-pop idol who’s in the process of debuting her first track as a solo artist while dealing with a crazed stalker. Underneath the surface, it’s really about a girl who’s in search of her place in the world.

The title, “Delulu,” is a term that the K-pop fan community began using to label people they considered to be delusional for believing that they’d be lucky enough to date or befriend their favorite K-pop idols.

Stuck in bumblefuck nowhere and pressured by her family to join a campaign she morally opposes, an angsty teen (who’s seen too many heist movies) plans a covert operation to sabotage her stepdad’s run for office.

Get to know the writer:

My screenplay is about a leftist pariah of a staunchly conservative small town, stuck at home thanks to an incident at college, who sets out to tank her stepdad’s campaign for office from the inside.

Think Kelly-Anne Conway’s daughter, Claudia. A Gen Z teenager known for outwardly sabotaging her parents. But this time, it’s an inside job. Cloak-and-dagger style.

In a college football-crazed town, after the big game, three of the players are accused of a hate crime of beating a gay man to death. The task of defending them falls to the school’s former All-American football star turned lawyer. CHRIS CAMPBELL, the lauded letterman now with a briefcase, is aided by an expedient college administration and a loyal police department but he hides a guilty conscience and has never been involved in a murder trial. What’s more, the prosecuting attorney is ABALARDO VAS, the most prominent attorney in the state, who also happens to be a gay man with a grudge against the college football team.

Get to know the writer:

My screenplay is about a former All-American football player, now a disillusioned lawyer,
who returns to his alma mater to solve a vicious hate crime that implicates his former football team. He is caught in the crossroads of his loyalty to his team and to doing the right thing.

A short, short film about finding magic and the trauma of sudden loss when that magic goes away.

Get to know the writer:

This is a short film that I feel reaches out to people who are struggling with the pain of losing a child. It’s such a common occurrence but so rarely presented accurately in media. I want to touch on the joy and then the sudden, heartbreaking moment when you learn you’ve lost the miracle–the magic–you were so immersed in. A silent loss, which is depicted in the film, is when you have no idea that the fetus inside you has failed to thrive, which is different from a physical loss. It’s a different thing to process and it’s incredibly difficult.
I hope the film will reach out to people and show them they are not alone in their grief. And I hope it will give medical professionals or others involved in ob/gyn services a tool to offer those who are grieving.

Get to know the writer:

Dribbit, a whiz-kid alien from Nergal, where all life is plant-based, gets a school assignment to do a good deed for problem-filled Earth. While researching (OK, eavesdropping on) our transmissions, he overhears Earth-girl Lindsay Monroe say, “Wouldn’t it be great if everyone were the same? The world would be perfect.”

But realizing his good deed has created a deadly, catastrophic environmental imbalance, he rushes to Earth to make things right. He recruits Lindsay’s help in a cross-country adventure to solve and reverse the runaway greening before it’s too late.

Pursued by federal agents and a freaked-out public, the two barely escape to Nergal to enlist the help of Dribbit’s hero: the mysterious, two-headed Professor Rebnar. But even with his help, how can they save the Earth in time?
